Huckabee said what?

I watched a portion of the Republican debate on Fox News a few nights ago and was mostly disappointed. I have recently been awakened to just how pro-war the Republican party has become and I don't like it. One comment in particular stuck out to me. The following news article includes the comment from Mike Huckabee, who is counting on the evangelical nominee to win the Republican nomination.

Mr Huckabee has faced grave doubts about his foreign policy experience, his greatest vulnerability, but got one of the biggest cheers of the night when asked about the incident last week when Iranian boats swarmed US navy ships in the Strait of Hormuz.

Asked whether the American commanders on the scene were right in not attacking the Iranian boats, Mr Huckabee said he backed their decisions, before warning Iran: "Be prepared, first, to put your sights on the American vessel. And then be prepared that the next thing you see will be the gates of Hell, because that is exactly what you will see after that."

Fred Thompson, the former Tennessee senator and Law & Order star who is banking all on victory in South Carolina to revive his campaign, said of the Iranian boat crews: "I think one more step and they would have been introduced to those virgins that they're looking forward to seeing." The crowd cheered.

It really disgusts me that this former pastor would joke about Iranians being killed at the hands of US warships. As a Christian, the prospect of anyone going to Hell is a serious matter. The last thing a Christian should do is joke about this reality. Instead, we should be praying that Iranians will turn to Christ, not die at the hands of a US warship. Shame on Huckabee, shame on Thompson, and shame on the people who laughed at their jokes. Huckabee will not have my vote.

Hey Brian,

I'm not crazy about the Huckster, either. I think what seems to be missing in these comments is a certain gravitas towards killing.

What are your thoughts on war in general and why?
